When the weather is nice, there’s nothing better than spending time outside with a group of your closest friends. Outdoor games provide a fun way to enjoy the fresh air and sunlight while bonding and making lasting memories together. From classic backyard favorites to exciting new games, there’s something for every friend group. Read on for some of the top outdoor games to play with your crew!

Classic Outdoor Games

You can’t go wrong with pulling out the classics at your next outdoor gathering. These timeless games never fail to deliver fun for all ages.

Tag: This chasing game has countless creative iterations, from freeze tag to zombie tag. Set boundaries ahead of time, then let the wild ruckus commence! Just make sure to establish a safe word in case things get too intense.

Hopscotch: Use sidewalk chalk to draw a hopscotch board outside. Players toss their marker (typically a rock, shell, or coin) into the numbered spaces, then hop through the course to retrieve it. Simple, nostalgic fun.

Jump rope: Jumping rope helps improve agility and cardiovascular fitness. Turn this playground staple into a group game by setting timed challenges, trying double dutch with two ropes, and seeing who can pull off the most impressive tricks.

Red Rover: Divide into two teams, then line up across from each other while holding hands. Take turns calling out “Red Rover, Red Rover, send (person’s name) right over!” That player then tries to break through the opposing team’s linked hands.

Lawn Games

Lawn games are perfect for barbeques, picnics, and patio hangouts with friends. Break these out when you want to liven the party while enjoying leisurely conversation.

Cornhole: Also known as bean bag toss, the objective is to throw bean bags at the opposite board to earn points. Players of all ages can quickly get the hang of this laidback lawn game.

Ladder Toss: Set up two ladder frames facing each other and take turns bolas tossing. The bolas wrap around the rungs, with higher rungs scoring more points.

KanJam: Combine elements of flying disc and cornhole in this fast-paced 2 vs 2 game. Throw and deflect the disc toward the goal for points. It takes teamwork and quick reflexes!

Spikeball: Played on a small trampoline-style net, spikeball is an intense 2 vs 2 game involving volleying a small ball. The energetic competition gets everyone on their toes.

Field Games

If you have a large grassy area or open field at your disposal, take advantage by playing these active field games guaranteed to up the ante on outdoor fun.

Ultimate Frisbee: This non-contact, team sport uses a flying disc in a competitive yet collaborative game similar to football or soccer with end zones. It takes speed, throws, and catches. For a fun twist, try playing disc golf on a full disc golf course.

Capture the Flag: Split into teams, establish your “territories” with jails, then hide your flag. Players sneak into the other team’s area to steal their flag without getting tagged and put in jail. Exciting for all ages!

Egg Toss: The classic egg toss helps build hand-eye coordination. Partners stand an increasing distance apart and gently toss a raw egg back and forth, seeing which team’s egg lasts the longest without breaking.

Sardines: Similar to hide-and-seek but with only one person hiding while everyone else searches. Once you find the hidden player, quietly join them in hiding until the last searcher remains. This suspenseful game leads to some silly pack-in scenarios!

Water Games

On those hot summer days, nothing beats water games with friends! Break out the water balloons, squirt guns, and pool floaties to kick the fun up a notch.

Marco Polo: One player closes their eyes and calls out “Marco!”, while the other players respond “Polo!” as they stealthily move about the pool. This suspenseful, skill-building aquatic game never gets old!

Chicken Fight: Divide into teams that sit on each other’s shoulders in the shallow end. Try to knock the opposing team over by pushing against one another! Just be careful not to play too rough.

Slip N Slide Kickball: Unfurl a plastic slip n slide in an open grassy area, lather it up with dish soap, then play a game of kickball. Running the slippery bases after kicking the ball adds exciting chaos!

Water Balloon Games: From water balloon target practice to hot potato-style pass games, the soggy possibilities are endless! Just be sure to clean up all the burst balloon pieces when you’re finished.

Nighttime Games

Don’t let the sunset end your outdoor festivities – the fun’s just getting started! Break out flashlights, lanterns, glow sticks and other illuminating accessories for these glow-in-the-dark games.

Flashlight Tag: Similar to freeze tag, except players must shine their flashlights on others to freeze. This after-hours version amps up the challenge!

Capture the Glow Stick: Using glow sticks instead of flags allows for covert nighttime missions to infiltrate enemy glow stick stockpiles. Just use caution when hiding and seeking in the dark.

Glow in the Dark Mini Golf: Set up a miniature putt putt course on your lawn using obstacles outlined in glow sticks and illuminate each hole with colorful lights. Bring out creative course designs year after year!

Scavenger Hunt: Craft a list of silly challenges that might involve disguises, singing songs, silly selfies, and completing dares. Then send teams out into the glowing night to complete their lists before the other teams.

Conclusion

Outdoor games open up a whole new world of exciting possibilities for spending quality time with friends. From backyard classics to heart-pounding field games and glow in the dark adventures after dark, the options for outdoor fun are truly endless. Just be sure to set ground rules, play safely, stay hydrated, and remember to bring the same great attitude and sense of humor that you bring to your friendships. Now pick some games from the lists above, gather your crew, head outside, and make some epic memories together!
