The Importance of A Healthy Study-Work Balance

It’s no news that students prioritize earning as much as they value studying in colleges/universities. For example, most international students who are getting a hybrid MBA try to juggle their studies with part-time work and other activities. They may also decide to study online and keep their daily work schedule for financial support.

Balancing studies and work can be challenging, especially since they both demand your best attention. However, it’s imperative to learn how to strike a balance. Here’s why it’s important to get a healthy study-work life:

Improved Work Productivity

Working a job and earning a degree online or on-site simultaneously will be daunting if you can’t prioritize your tasks. So, you should always have a list of work/school tasks, with the most important ones ranked above the less essential ones. Drafting a priority list will give you direction and purpose every day you need to either get to work or attend a class.

For instance, if you have assignments that are due in the short term, you can include them at the top of your priority list to avoid last-minute work and confusion. In the long run, using priority lists for the day, week, or month boosts productivity.

Reduced Level of Burnout

If you can’t find a healthy balance between work and study, you’re prone to burning out. Most students experience burnout when they face ongoing stress and frustration. Burnout gets worse when these students don’t have time to relax and recharge after those stressful happenings.

Some of the most common signs of burnout for students are:

Exhaustion

This happens when you begin to feel tired, sluggish and drained a lot of the time. Students experience this due to mental or physical stress.

Lack of Interest

Burnout makes you lose interest in lots of activities you previously loved. For instance, you may begin to lose interest in your favorite course or a job.

Lack of Creativity and Concentration

Creativity and concentration are major factors that set excellent students or workers apart. When you begin to experience burnout, you may notice an unusual difficulty in bringing up ideas and staying true to your personal academic and work goals.

Feelings of Anxiety and Depression

When a student is emotionally and mentally drained, they may begin to develop feelings of anxiety and depression. For instance, some may begin to feel uncomfortable or scared during classes or when there’s an assessment.

Better Academic Performance

A balanced schedule that perfectly incorporates school and work improves academic performance. Many times, your level of academic success is highly dependent on how you manage your time.

Tips on Time Management for Better Academic Performance

Below are some tips for managing your time as a student getting a hybrid MBA or any other degree:

  • Use a daily schedule template
  • Set goals and measure your progress
  • Break large projects/tasks into smaller ones
  • Be realistic about your time

Fostering Healthier Relationships

Finding a balance between work and study can help build your relationship with family and friends. It gives you a chance for quality time since you won’t get overwhelmed with work or academic responsibilities. Strong relationships also prove to have direct links to reduced anxiety and depression, improved self-esteem, and a stronger immune system.

Building Transferrable Skills

Striving to find a study-work balance can help build skills like resilience, commitment, and adaptability. These skills can make your potential employer see you as a confident problem-solver and a go-to person for company challenges.

Final Thoughts

When finding a work-study balance, time constraints, financial pressures, and high academic demands may seem like major obstacles. However, you can overcome them when you prioritize planning and scheduling your time. In the long run, learning to manage your academic and work life gives you the opportunity for growth, financial stability, and career development.
